It's Time for Beautiful Feet.
The Ease of Wearing Flip Flops
For many women, one of the first signs of summer may include wearing flip flops. The lack of laces makes them simple to wear, and can be considered favorite shoes to wear in warm weather. There are several negative aspects flip flops have, and these may include the absence of an arch, very little or no cushioning, and a minimum amount of shock absorbers. The toes may tend to curl, which may be a natural reaction to keep the shoe from falling off. This can lead to changes in the walking pattern, which may affect different parts of the foot. Many women may notice heel pain, which can gradually develop, and this may be a result of the lack of cushioning in the heel area. It may be beneficial to consider wearing shoes that have a strap across the back, and this can help to support the foot. It is suggested to speak with a podiatrist if you have questions about how wearing flips flops can affect your feet.
Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Dr. Frederick Quirante from Texas. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.
Flip-Flops and Feet
When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops. Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer. However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.
How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?
- Ankle problems
- Hip problems
- Lower back problems
- Pain in the balls of the feet
- Problems with foot arches
- Changes in the way you walk
Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?
Yes. Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections. Common injuries and ailments include:
- Sprained ankles
- Blisters
- Infections
- Cuts and Scrapes
I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?
When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet. These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

The ailment that is known as plantar hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that affects the feet. When the feet sweat profusely, it may cause discomfort and embarrassment. Patients who are afflicted with this condition may have difficulty in keeping shoes and socks dry, which may lead to an unpleasant odor. Research has indicated that genetic factors may play a significant role in the development of overactive sweat glands. Other conditions may arise as a result of this condition, including athlete’s foot and toenail fungus. Mild relief may be found when the feet are washed daily, with extra emphasis placed on drying the feet thoroughly, especially in between the toes. Additionally, it may be beneficial to choose shoes that are made of breathable materials, which may include leather or canvas. If plantar hyperhidrosis is affecting many of your daily activities, it is suggested to speak with a podiatrist who can recommend treatment options that are correct for you.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet
Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.
Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.
Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.
In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.
A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.

The condition that is referred to as Sever’s disease will typically affect young teenagers. Noticeable symptoms may include inflammation and swelling in the heel, and this may be a result of an injury that may have occurred to the growth plate. Patients who are afflicted with this condition may notice they are walking on tip toes or limping, and their feet may feel stiff when they are waking up. It typically affects older children who frequently participate in sporting activities. This may cause the tendons and muscles to tighten, and pressure may be put on the growth plate. Mild relief may be found if the activities are stopped that may have caused this condition. Additionally, some patients find it helpful to wear shoes that have an open back, or to wrap the heel with an elastic bandage. If you think your child may have Sever’s disease, it is advised to consult with a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition.

Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Genetic factors may cause the muscles and tendons in the toes to become weak, and this may cause a condition that is referred to as hammertoe. It will typically affect the second and third toes and occur when the middle joint becomes dislocated. Additional reasons for this to develop may come from having arthritis in the feet, or from wearing shoes that do not have enough room in the toe area. Cushioned pads may be used to reduce mild discomfort that may be present. For more severe cases of hammertoe, a proper diagnosis is needed to determine the extent of the deformity, and surgery may be necessary to permanently straighten the toes. If you have this condition, it is strongly suggested to seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can guide you toward beginning proper treatment.
Hammertoe
Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Dr. Frederick Quirante from Texas. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.
Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
- Pain in the affected toes
- Development of corns or calluses due to friction
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Contracture of the toes
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option
